[CLOSED] Suspected virus

Postby FlameRedSRT4 » Mon, 17 Sep 2012, 04:44

I think my machine has a virus. I'm no computer expert, but I can find my way around the keyboard.

Machine Details:

Dell Latitude E6410
Windows 7
Panda Global Protection 2011 (4.00.00)
SUPER Anti-spyware

Symptoms and actions taken:

-Dreaded blue screen upon start-up, states that it is "dumping memory," once complete machine powers down on its own.
-Start up in "safe mode" machine seems to work OK, slow but functioning.
-Ran SUPER Antisptware. 0 detected
-Ran Panda. 20 threats detected
-Restarted machine, blue screen again, same as above
-Restarted in 'safe mode' w/internet access.
-Opened Panda, it is off and will not turn on, scan, update... Nothing. (states "last update: 1/1/1970")
-Opened SUPER Antispyware, updated and scanned as should. 7 threats detected.
-Restarted and blue screen again, as above.

This is my daughters machine and have no clue exactly what she does/done. The blue screen had been happening for more/less a week. This is my first chance at getting in over my head, obviously.

Thank you for any and all help!

Chad

Hi!

Please be advised that a BSOD (blue screen of DEATH! lol) does not mean you have an infection.

The BSOD itself will notify you why it was caused (e.g. you will receive an error code with a brief explanation).
In any case, if you believe your computer if infected you can do the following:
1) Start in safe-mode with networking.
2) Right-click on the "My Computer" icon and launch a Panda scan via the context menu.

Alternatively you can try the Panda SafeCD as per the following FAQ:
viewtopic.php?f=24&t=21

Also, I suggest you do a thorough check-disk of your system partition as follows:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315265#method2

In addition, a BSOD may be caused by faulty RAM modules. Do perform a memtest as follows:
http://www.memtest.org/
- download the disk image, burn it on a CD and boot from it.

Let us know what happened.

Good luck!

BR,
Radko
